Content Management System

What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) helps you to create, edit and manage content on your website through a specially developed web application.

Web pages essentially contain information (content) - Text, Images, Audio, Video or Animation, which are displayed based on how the pages are styled or coded. Having a Content Management System helps you to seamlessly update and maintain your website without having to rely on a web designer or developer. CMS is easy to use and does not require knowledge of web designing or coding.

Does your website need a CMS?

Whether your website needs a CMS will depend on what type of website you require, the content on your website and how often you need updates to your website.

A website can have Static or Dynamic web pages. In a Static Web Page, the content or information on the page does not change once the page has been stored on the server after design and development. One would need knowledge of coding & HTML and a FTP application to make changes to the pages.

Whereas Dynamic web pages are loaded by the Content Management System (CMS) - a web application specifically developed for the purpose. The owner or the administrator of the website can make real time changes and updates to the website through the CMS. This does not require any technical knowledge as the CMS is custom built for the user.

Having a CMS makes it easier for you to edit or update content on your website without having to rely on a web designer or developer. CMS does not require you to have knowledge of web design or coding for editing or creating content on your website. As the CMS is installed on hosting server, you make real time changes to your website from anywhere by logging into the CMS.

A CMS powered website will cost high initially, than a static website, as it involves the additional component of developing the CMS and integrating it with the website. But if your website serves continuously changing information and therefore needs regular updating, investing in a CMS will be cheaper on the long run. A CMS is also recommended for website with large number of pages, for eg. website with pages on products or services, as these pages can be created using the CMS.
